In an effort to obtain a better grasp of how Eliot
businesses are taxed, we asked Jean Painchaud, Eliot's Tax Assessor to
attend this month's meeting. In moving forward, we, the members of
the Business Development Committee will analyze the information obtained
and use it in our future discussions of potential marketing plans
and/or incentives that could be considered to attract new
businesses to our town.
Also included in this month's discussions were
current zoning and 3-acre-minimum requirements for businesses along
Route 236. It was the general consensus, of the attending members,
that the current system:
-
Discourages many new businesses from building
along Dow Highway.
-
Motivates Contractors, Business Developers
and/or Small Business Owners to build in other areas of the town,
which ultimately will lead to a decrease in our woodlands/natural
areas by contributing to urban sprawl.
We will be bringing these issues to the attention of the
Comprehensive Planning Committee in an effort to analyze
and revise the town ordinances pertaining to these issues.
Due to the holidays, December's meeting was
rescheduled from
December 20th to Wednesday, December 27th at 7 PM.
